Australian Biosafety Guidelines – What you need to know (and what has changed)
Description:
Lisa van Duin (University of Melbourne's BioRisk Manager) will be presenting on the useful biosafety guidance covered by AS/NZS 2243.3:2022 Microbiological Safety and Containment and on the key changes in the new version. AS/NZS 2243.3 is the ‘Micro’ part of a series of Australian Standards that promote safety in laboratories. It covers the biosafety requirements needed to manage risks associated with handling biological agents and materials. It is considered the ‘gold-standard’ in terms of biosafety guidance in Australia. In 2014, it was identified that the standard required a targeted update to include a section covering the micro containment requirements for aquatic organisms, this evolved into a major revision of the whole standard that took eight years to finalise!
The talk will cover: *an introduction of the standard and how we use it, *some background on the review undertaken by Standards Australia, *a summary of the useful biosafety information covered in the standard, and *the key changes that are good to know about.
