Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste collection information, categories, labels, additional resources and frequently asked questions.

Hazardous waste is waste that poses a threat or risk to public health, safety and/or the environment. This includes waste generated in laboratories (laboratory waste) also referred to as prescribed industrial waste.

Hazardous waste generated in laboratories (and some other teaching and research activities) is collected by hazardous waste contractors – Green Care Environmental Solutions and Cleanaway Daniels Services – through supplier agreements. Both Green Care Environmental Solutions and Cleanaway Daniels Services are EPA authorised accredited agents engaged by the University of Melbourne.

Health & Safety Services (Business Services) through University of Melbourne service agreements/contracts, facilitate the removal of two categories of hazardous waste. These are determined as Category 1 and Category 2 laboratory waste.

The hazardous waste guidance sheet is a quick reference guide to the packaging, storage and other requirements when disposing of hazardous waste.

  • Category 1

Category 1 waste is managed by Health & Safety Services through a central budget at no cost to the local areas.

Examples of commonly produced Category 1 laboratory waste include (but are not limited to):

    • Strong acid waste
    • Strong alkali waste
    • Chlorinated waste

    • Developer waste
    • Heavy metal waste
    • Non-clinical waste sharps
    • Pesticide/herbacide waste
    • Solid contaminated waste
    • Oil waste

Note: If you are unsure the classification of your waste, or if your waste has specific properties (eg a mixture of strong acid and peroxide) separate this waste from others, put in its own container and label the container appropriately with the name or contents of mixture.

  • Category 2

Category 2 waste is facilitated by Health and Safety with the cost charged to the local areas.

Examples of commonly produced Category 2 laboratory waste include (but are not limited to):

    • Anatomical waste
    • Animal anatomical waste
    • Bio hazardous materials (including clinical waste)
    • Biosecurity (quarantine) waste
    • Clinical sharps
    • Excess and out-of-date chemicals
    • Genetically modified materials (GMO) waste
