Chair sizing guide
This chair sizing guide has been prepared to assist staff in selecting a suitable task chair for use at a standard workstation on campus. The table below outlines task seating available from the five current University of Melbourne contracted workstation furniture suppliers. All chairs included in the table below have been evaluated to ensure they meet all relevant Australian Standards.
When selecting a task chair, it is important to select a model that closely matches your body size to provide optimal support and comfort and best working posture. The table below provides guidance to assist with ordering a chair that is the right fit for you. Note that this is a guide only. Humans come in all shapes and sizes and there is no such thing as an average body type.
Task chairs are provided without arm rests to ensure proximity to the desk is not impeded however if arms are needed to assist mobility they can be provided at a low cost. Chairs are fitted with nylon castors as standard. These are designed for use on a low pile carpeted surface. If your workstation is in an area with a lower rolling resistance floor surface (e.g., timber floorboards, tiles or concrete), rubber castors may be required and need to be specified.
If you work at a non-standard workstation (counter, laboratory bench or other) or if you have a specific requirement related to a health condition or disability, it is recommended you seek assistance with chair selection from your supervisor and your local Health and Safety Business Partner.
