Training courses and induction

Use this page to find health and safety training, induction requirements and guidance on training responsibilities.

Health and safety training helps staff, students and other personnel understand hazards, manage risks and work safely. Training requirements depend on the person’s role, work activities, work environment and local risk assessments.

What training do I need?

Training requirements may include:

  • University health and safety induction;
  • local area induction;
  • role-specific or task-specific training;
  • hazard-specific training;
  • supervisor or manager training;
  • emergency, warden or first aid training;
  • Health and Safety Representative training;
  • refresher training where required.

If you are unsure what training is required, discuss this with your supervisor, manager or local health and safety contact.

For staff

Staff should complete required University and local health and safety induction and any training required for their role or work activities.

This may include training for fieldwork, laboratories, workshops, plant and equipment, hazardous substances, manual handling, psychosocial risk, first aid, emergency roles or other higher-risk activities.

For supervisors and managers

Supervisors and managers are responsible for identifying health and safety training needs for their staff and students.

Training needs should be considered when:

  • a person starts in a role;
  • duties or work activities change;
  • new hazards are introduced;
  • risk assessments identify training as a control;
  • an incident or hazard indicates a training gap;
  • refresher training is required.

For students

Students may need health and safety induction or training before participating in laboratory work, fieldwork, placements, workshops, research activities or other University-supervised activities.

For Health and Safety Representatives

Elected Health and Safety Representatives should attend WorkSafe-approved HSR training and refresher training in accordance with the relevant requirements.
