  • Are you interested in becoming a workplace first aider, including for fieldwork? Here's what you need to know

    The Provide First Aid certificate is a nationally recognised course with accreditation lasting 3 years.   It consists of the following units of competency:

    • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
    • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support

    Participants are required to complete a face-to-face training session in addition to an online component which will be sent to you by the provider. To receive your certificate, you must complete the online component within 4 weeks of the training session.

    Upon successful completion, you will receive a digital Statement of Attainment from our service provider.

    Annual refreshers of the CPR component are recommended but not required to maintain validity of the Provide First Aid qualification

    Both courses are available for enrolment and booking.

    1. Discuss with your supervisor: Talk to your supervisor about the opportunity to become a workplace first aider. You must have managerial approval to complete the training and can provide evidence to Health and Safety Services.
    2. Commitments: You agree to the responsibility of being a workplace first aider, including having your contact details published in your building as a designated first aider.
    3. Obtain certification: First aiders must hold a current 'Provide first aid' certificate.
    4. Inform the Chief Warden and Health and Safety Partner: Once certified, let your building's Chief Warden and your local Health and Safety Business Partner know. They will include your details on building emergency information posters.
    5. Get familiar with emergency procedures: It's recommended that you familiarise yourself with emergency information, incident and hazard reporting, and the locations of defibrillators around campus.

      Eligibility

      To be eligible, you need to be:

    1. A nominated workplace first aider; and
    2. Employees of the University of Melbourne, whether in continuing, fixed-term, or casual roles
    3. OR

    4. On-campus graduate research students or those participating in fieldwork.
    5. If you do not fall into these categories but still wish to organise first aid training, you can do so through our preferred service provider or independently. However, expenses will need to be covered locally. Our Preferred Service Provider is Real Response Phone: 1300 241 715

      Funding

      The Health and Safety Services will only cover the costs of the training courses facilitated by them.

      Reimbursement will not be provided for any costs associated with first aid training undertaken outside of the Health and Safety Services facilitated courses.

      If you require additional training sessions through our service provider or independently, you can do so but the expenses will need to be covered locally.

  • It is a two-day course tailored for individuals who travel to remote or wilderness areas where medical support is more than one hour away.

    At the end of the course you will be able to:

    • Prepare a contingency plan for providing a first aid response in a remote situation
    • Deliver prolonged casualty care including psychological assistance
    • Demonstrate competent CPR on an adult and infant manikin
    • Respond to at least three simulated remote area emergency scenarios
    • Understand environmental conditions, communication systems and evacuation procedures

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, you need to be:

    • A nominated workplace first aider; and
    • Employees of the University of Melbourne, whether in continuing, fixed-term, or casual roles

    OR

    • On-campus graduate research students or those participating in fieldwork.
    • Additionally, you need to be engaged in fieldwork and/or travel to remote or wilderness areas where medical support is more than one hour away.

    Funding

    The Health and Safety Services will only cover the costs of the training courses facilitated by them.

    Reimbursement will not be provided for any costs associated with training undertaken outside of the Health and Safety Services facilitated courses.

    If you require additional training sessions through our service provider or independently, you can do so but the expenses will need to be covered locally.

  • Become a Mental Health First Aider

    Are you interested in becoming a mental health first aider? Here's what you need to know:

    Mental Health First Aid - Supporting Employees is a 2-day certified training program which will teach you how to recognise signs and provide initial support to your staff. Through a range of scenarios, you will learn how to respond to developing mental health issues as well as crisis situations.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Learn signs and symptoms of mental health issues
    • Learn techniques for supporting a person developing a mental health illness
    • Appropriate intervention methods
    • Where to get professional assistance

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, you need to be either:

    • In a leadership position, meaning you supervise other employees
    • A HR or Health and Safety Business Partner

    However, alternative mental health training courses geared towards student mental well-being are also offered for academic faculty and student services personnel. For further information, please reach out to the Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team.

  • This 1-hour training session will educate participants on all aspects of portable fire extinguisher selection and use. Participants will become familiar with basic fire science, extinguishing agents, and different extinguisher types, as well as educated in the safe, appropriate, and effective use of each extinguisher type.

    Participants will also take part in a practical session involving live fire in a contained and controlled learning environment – as such, close-toed shoes and clothes suitable for an activity located outdoors are recommended.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, you need to be either:

    • A building emergency wardens (Chief Wardens and Floor Wardens)
    • Staff and students working or studying in high risk environment who might be expected to put out small (approximate 1m x 1m maximum or equivalent) fires when safe to do so also can undertake this training.

  • Become a Chief Emergency Warden

    Chief and Deputy Chief Emergency Warden Training – Introductory Course

    This training session is delivered by Fire Rescue Victoria’s (FRV) training department – Fire Equipment Services (FES) Training.

    The training focuses on ensuring Chief and Deputy Chief emergency wardens:

    • have the skills, confidence and knowledge required to lead effective emergency response to a wide range of emergencies,
    • lead training (incl. drills and exercises), as part of the Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), and
    • support effective emergency planning and preparedness more broadly through their local Emergency Planning Committee (EPC) or equivalent.

    Each session will include training specifically focused on use of emergency alerting and communications systems equipment including Fire Indicator Panels (FIP) and Emergency Warning and Intercommunication Systems (EWIS).

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, you need to be either a nominated Chief or Deputy Chief Wardens.

    Reimbursement will not be provided for any costs associated with training undertaken outside of the Health and Safety Services facilitated courses.

  • Elected Health and Safety Representative Training

    Have you just been elected as a HSR or is it time to refresh your HSR training as a currently elected HSR?

    WorkSafe Victoria has a list of WorkSafe Approved training providers who deliver HSR initial training and HSR refresher training.

    We recommend an elected HSR receives training from one of these approved training providers.

    Please find and enrol into a WorkSafe approved HSR training session.

    Please note, it is important to:

    • select your training dates in consultation with your supervisor
    • Upon completion of your training as an elected HSR, contact the Health & Safety Services team and provide:
      • a copy of your invoice
      • a copy of your certificate

    Fees and Conditions

    Central funding for this training is available only to elected employee Health & Safety Representatives in the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act 2004 (Vic).

    The University has a central fund, administered by Health & Safety Services, which will pay training costs for eligible trainees. Please note that if you do not appear on the University's list of elected employee Health & Safety Representatives, and are seeking Health & Safety Services assistance with enrolment in this training or payment of costs, you may need to provide evidence of your election before we can assist you.

    Please contact Health and Safety Services via ohs-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au and inform us of the proposed training and cost.

    Once the invoice is received, please send it to ohs-enquiries@unimelb.edu.au along with your certificate. The Health & Safety Services team will process the payment.

    Course descriptions

    Approved training for elected employee Health & Safety Representatives comprises the following courses:

    Initial Training - 5-day course

    • Description: Introductory training on the role and function of an elected Health and Safety Representative, for newly elected Health and Safety Representatives.
    • Provider: WorkSafe-approved external provider.
    • Audience: Elected Health and Safety Representatives who have not undertaken approved Health and Safety Representative training previously.

    Refresher Training - 1 day course

    • Description: Refresher training on the role and function of an elected Health and Safety Representative. Some providers may offer a selection of customised content within this training, based on different workplace hazard profiles.
    • Provider: WorkSafe-approved external provider.
    • Audience: Elected employee Health and Safety Representatives who have undertaken the 5-day training previously. Refresher training may be undertaken once per year.
  • Hazard-based training is safety training which teaches individuals how to recognize risks and implement preventive measures to avoid accidents or injuries related to specific identified hazards.

    It is aimed at anyone who may be exposed to hazards in their job, including employees, supervisors, and safety officers, helping them understand how to manage risks effectively and ensure a safer working environment.

    Training can include:

    • Manual  handling
    • Gas safety
    • Asbestos  awareness
    • Pipette  Ergonomics
