Chemicals are used widely across the University. Some chemicals are low risk, while others may be hazardous substances, dangerous goods, chemicals of security concern, drugs, poisons, controlled substances or other regulated materials.
Chemical risks must be identified, assessed and controlled before chemicals are purchased, stored, handled, used, transported or disposed of.
Before working with chemicals
Before working with chemicals, ensure that you:
- Check the Safety Data Sheet.
- Confirm whether the chemical is hazardous, a dangerous good or otherwise regulated.
- Complete or review a chemical risk assessment.
- Confirm storage, labelling, segregation and handling requirements.
- Ensure required controls, PPE and emergency arrangements are in place.
- Confirm that users have received appropriate training and instruction.
- Manage chemical waste in accordance with University requirements.
- Seek advice if the chemical is highly regulated or if requirements are unclear.
